Walt and Skyler attend the birthday party of Elliott Schwartz, Walt's former graduate school colleague and current CEO of Gray Matter Technologies. Walt reunites with Gretchen Schwartz, his former fiancée who is now Elliott's wife and business partner. After reminiscing about their graduate school days, Elliott offers Walt a job at Gray Matter with full health benefits. Walt realizes Skyler told Elliott about his cancer and angrily declines, viewing the offer as charity. Jesse struggles to find legitimate employment and unsuccessfully attempts to replicate Walt's meth recipe with his friend Badger, producing inferior product. Walt Jr. is caught trying to buy beer underage and calls Hank instead of Walt to pick him up from the police station. Hank lectures Walt Jr. about not calling his own father for help. Walt's family stages an intervention to convince him to undergo chemotherapy treatment. Walt insists he needs the autonomy to make his own choice and doesn't want to spend his remaining time suffering through treatment. The next morning, Walt tells Skyler he will accept Elliott and Gretchen's financial assistance for treatment. When Gretchen calls to discuss the arrangement, Walt lies that his insurance will cover everything and their help isn't needed. Walt then visits Jesse and asks to resume their meth-cooking partnership.
